In het kader van de feestelijkheden rond 50 jaar Congo toont de Universiteit Gent tijdens de Gentse feesten een selectie antieke Congolese wapens uit de Etnografische collectie voor het eerst aan het publiek.

Curator Bruno Claessens (expert Afrikaanse kunst verbonden aan Yale University) schetst met ‘Vlijmscherp’ met een 40-tal wapens een representatief beeld van de wijde variatie aan messen en zwaarden van de Centraal Afrikaanse volkeren. Gesmeed om te doden overstijgen vele exemplaren door hun decoratieve karakter hun utilitaire karakter.

Door het ontbreken van geschreven bronnen zijn ze stille getuigen van een tijdperk voor de komst van de blanke veroveraar, wiens vuurwapens de doodsteek van de traditionele wapens betekende. De tentoonstelling loopt
tijdens de Gentse feesten, van 17 tot 26 juli, in het Pand (Onderbergen 1, Gent), dagelijks van 11 tot 17u.

As part of the celebrations around 50 years of independance of Congo, the Ghent University will show for the first time during the “Gentse feesten” festival a selection of antique Congolese weapons from the Ethnographic collection to the public.

Curator Bruno Claessens (an African art expert at Yale University) presents with ‘Vlijmscherp’ with a 40 weapons representative of the wide variety of knives and swords of the Central African nations.

Forged to kill many of them transcend the decorative nature the daily use nature of their character.

By the lack of written sources, they are silent witnesses of a era before the coming of the white conqueror, whose fire arms meant the death to the traditional weapons .

The ‘Razor Sharp’ exhibition runs during the ‘Gentse feesten’ Ghent festival, from July 17 to 26, in ‘Het Pand’ (Onderbergen 1
Ghent), daily from 11 to 17h.

Dans le cadre des célébrations des 50 ans de l'indépendance du Congo, l'Université de Gand présentera pour la première fois, au public, pendant le festival "Gentse feesten", une sélection d'armes congolaises antiques de la collection ethnographique.

Le Conservateur Bruno Claessens (expert en Art Africain expert à l'Université de Yale) présente avec ‘Vlijmscherp’ 40 armes représentatives de la grande variété des couteaux et des épées des nations d'Afrique Centrale.

En l'absence de sources écrites, ils sont témoins silencieux d'une ère précédent la venue du conquérant blanc, dont les armes à feu signifia la mort des armes traditionnelles.

L'exposition ‘Vlijmscherp’ se tient pendant le festival de Ghent «Gentse feesten», à partir du 17 juillet au 26, dans 'Het Hôtel Pand' (1 Onderbergen Gand), tous les jours de 11 à 17 h.
